Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)
Menopause is a natural and inevitable part of aging, but that doesn’t make the symptoms that accompany the end of your period any less difficult to live with. In the time before and during menopause, fluctuating hormone levels can disrupt many essential body processes — from your mood and ability to focus to your sex drive and internal “thermostat.” Fortunately, hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can be a highly effective treatment for patients going through menopause or women who generally experience uncomfortable symptoms due to out-of-balance hormones. At Highland Gynecology, HRT using bioidentical hormone pellets, transdermal patches, or other FDA-approved options can stabilize your hormone production and resolve distressing symptoms without causing “rollercoaster” changes in your mood and energy levels.
What is Hormone Replacement Therapy?
Hormone replacement therapy is designed to regulate your body’s levels of estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone in order to reduce symptoms such as mood swings, hot flashes, night sweats, low libido, and vaginal dryness, among other negative effects associated with menopause. These concerns may resolve on their own for some patients, but many women seek HRT to alleviate or manage the intensity of their menopausal symptoms. HRT can also be a solution for pre-menopausal women who experience disrupting side effects due to irregular periods.
Who is a Candidate for Hormone Replacement Therapy?
Hormone replacement therapy can be personalized according to each patient’s needs to enhance energy levels, increase libido, improve brain functioning (ability to focus, memory, etc.), or alleviate certain mental health concerns like irritability, anxiety, and depression. Women may benefit from HRT if they’re experiencing any of the following symptoms:
- Night sweats or hot flashes
- Decreased energy or sleeplessness
- Low sex drive or painful intercourse due to vaginal dryness
- Inability to focus or memory loss
- Mood swings, irritability, anxiety, or confusion
During your consultation, board-certified gynecologist Rachael Haverland, MD will listen to your concerns, review your medical history, and evaluate your hormone levels via blood work to help determine the best HRT treatment plan for you. Depending on the nature of your concerns, our intimate wellness services may provide a better solution to effectively treat your symptoms.
How is Hormone Replacement Therapy Performed?
Dr. Haverland will help you determine the most optimal method of hormone replacement therapy during your consultation, and explain the details of your specific treatment in person. During pellet-based HRT, Dr. Haverland inserts bioidentical hormone pellets — hormones derived from plant sources whose biochemical structure perfectly matches the hormones naturally produced by a woman’s body — under the skin. These pellets, which are approximately the size of a grain of rice, then consistently release small doses of the hormone into the bloodstream, providing optimal therapy that can achieve better outcomes than other modalities or HRT. The implantation process takes place during a simple in-office procedure that usually takes 5 to 10 minutes. Local anesthesia is utilized.
